Plant Summary

The peppermint-scented pelargonium, Pelargonium tomentosum, is a low-growing, aromatic subshrub with velvety, mint-scented leaves and small, white flowers. It is native to the mountains of the Western Cape, where it grows in moist, semi-shaded habitats. It is a useful plant for culinary, medicinal and ornamental purposes. The leaves can be used to flavour cakes, drinks and pot-pourris, and also have soothing properties for bruises and sprains. The plant is easy to grow from cuttings and can be used as a ground cover, a container plant or a contrast plant in a fynbos garden. It prefers well-drained soil and light shade.
