Plant Summary

The horsetail restio, Elegia capensis, is an elegant, tall plant with large decorative sheaths along its stems. It makes an excellent feature plant in gardens, especially near water. It grows well in Mediterranean climates with good drainage and ample water. Restios are best planted at the start of the rainy season. The plants spread vigorously via rhizomes so allow enough space. Prune older stems every few years. Elegia capensis can be grown from seeds treated with smoke or by dividing large plants.
