Plant Summary

The red alder, Cunonia capensis, is an evergreen garden tree known for its beautiful, scented flowers that bloom in late summer and attract insects. The tree produces small, brown, two-horned capsules that release very fine, sticky seeds. The red alder prefers a temperate climate and does not grow well in very hot and dry or windy conditions. It is traditionally used for treating nervous complaints and its wood has been used to make furniture.
