Bulbine, also commonly known as burn jelly plantoccurs widespread throughout parts of Northern Cape, Western and Eastern Cape. It is a fast growing succulent perennial with fleshy, linear green leaves in opposite rows while clasping the stems at the base. It forms spreading clumps so makes a wonderful ground cover.

Her flowers are likened to 6- petal shaped stars and are carried on an upright stem during spring but do occasionally bloom at other times. The petals are yellow or on some occasions orange, with fluffy yellow stamens which attract bees.

Bulbine has great value in the home or balcony garden. Her fresh leaves produce a jelly like liquid that can be used for burns, rashes, blisters and insect bites. She is also useful as a first aid remedy for children’s’ daily bumps and scrapes.

Bulbine  is often used in landscaping where a drought-resistant, tough groundcover is required as it multiplies rapidly. It is water wise and relatively easy to grow while looking good all year round.

For best results it should be planted in well-drained soil preferably enriched with compost. The dead flower heads should be removed to encourage further flowering. These plants prefer full sun, but are able to grow in semi-shade for part of the day.
