Salvia africana-caerulea

Indigenous to the Western Cape, Blue Sage has grey-green leaves and stems.  Her leaves curl upwards and are narrow, with dark purple, violet blue or white flowers in Spring, early Summer and Winter.

She is beautifully aromatic and commonly used in cooking, just as the more familiar European sage would be, and as a medicine.

Blue sage is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and antioxidant. As a tea she is commonly used to help ease coughs, colds and flu. As well as to calm digestive upsets.

As a gargle, Blue sage is a wonderful remedy for sore throats. Mix with honey to ease coughs and use in a wash for cuts and grazes.

Blue Sage is a wonderful addition to any biodiversity garden and bees love her. She is best grown in full sun and enjoys well-drained, composted soil. She is a hardy plant that can be pruned every year or alternatively every second year to encourage bushy, non-woody growth. This is best done in late winter, prior to new spring growth.

New plants are easy to propagate from seed and cuttings.

For a tea, add 1 tablespoon of fresh leaves to 1 cup of boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes and enjoy.
