Silene undulata

Common names: dream root (English).
Botanical name: Silene undulata

The dream root, Silene undulata, is a perennial herb with sticky stems and white or pinkish flowers that open at night and attract hawk moths. It is widely distributed in southern and tropical Africa, where it grows on damp slopes and flats. It is also known as a ‘dream plant’ because its roots are used by the Xhosa people to induce lucid dreams and communicate with their ancestors. This practice is part of their traditional healing and divination system. Silene undulata is easy to grow from seed and prefers well-drained soil.
