Polygala virgata, also known as the purple broom, is a slender evergreen shrub with spikes of bright purple magenta flowers that attract bees, insects and bumblebees. It belongs to the Polygalaceae or milkwort family. The leaves and stems of this plant have been used as blood purifiers in traditional medicine. Polygala virgata is a fast growing, hardy shrub that can be grown in any garden in South Africa. It tolerates drought, wind and some frost, and prefers sunny or semi-shade positions. It is self-seeding and produces seedlings that can be easily transplanted.
