Botanical name: Lachenalia mutabilis

Lachenalia mutabilis is a bulbous perennial plant with a single, fleshy leaf that curves up along the stem, often with maroon spots and crinkled margins. The plant has showy flowers that change from blue to mauve, and then to yellow, and appear in spikes up to 45 cm high. The stem also has unique red spots. Lachenalia mutabilis is found on sandy and stony slopes in the north and southwestern Cape and Namaqualand. It prefers full sun to part shade, and warmer areas, and should be protected from frost. The plant is adaptable and easy to grow, and requires regular watering once the foliage begins to appear.
