The tree is found in most of the forests in southern Africa and Swaziland. The timber of the assegai is good, strong, and durable and has been exploited since the earliest colonial days, particularly for wagon-making. The bark, twigs, and leaves were once used for tanning leather. The bark is in great demand for traditional medicine, and is used to treat stomach ailments, diarrhea, and as a blood purifier and aphrodisiac.
