Arctopus echinatus, also known as flat thorn, is a spiny, stemless South African perennial. The tuberous roots have a long history of medicinal use against skin disorders, venereal diseases, and as a general tonic. The leaves are large, bright green, and spiny. Male plants bear cream flowers while females have greenish flowers in spiny flower-like heads. It grows in full sun on sandy soils, going dormant in summer.
