Aponogeton distachyos, also known as waterblommetjie, is a hardy aquatic plant that is widespread and common in the winter rainfall areas of the Western, Eastern, and Northern Cape. It is adapted to growing in ponds and vleis which dry up in summer, and the dormant tubers sprout again as soon as the pools fill in autumn. The plant produces sweetly scented, white flowers that are edible and used to make a South African stew called waterblommetjie bredie.
