The garlic buchu, Agathosma apiculata, is a shrub that grows up to 1.5 meters high and is known for its aromatic leaves that release a garlic scent when crushed. It produces white flowers from April to January and is attractive to insects, bees, and butterflies. It is suitable for coastal gardens and fynbos or water-wise gardens. The oils in its leaves are extracted and used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, medicines, soaps, and food colorants. It requires full sun, well-drained soil, and can be planted in soil that is alkaline to acid. It can be propagated by sowing seed and by taking cuttings.
